However, the dual nature of light is fundamental to understanding quantum mechanics. This wave-particle duality is observed with other subatomic particles as well. Light exhibits diffraction and interference patterns when observed as a wave, and displays characteristics such as a discrete energy level when observed as a particle. Accepting this dual nature is important to understanding the behavior of subatomic particles.
