Over my career I have been schooled in just about every manner of teaching style: direct instruction, learning groups, integrative, differential instruction, secondary English instruction, small group instruction, inquiry, etc. But, what matters most is to learn where the student is academically now, what are the obstacles that might be getting in their way and how best he or she learns, and what are their strengths. This is my starting position. I envision myself as both a teacher of concepts and a guide to reaching goals. I can do what is necessary to support students, preferably one-on-one helping them understand concepts, but also can do complete lessons when necessary. Homework help is also available. To accomplish this I might ask questions about what they want to accomplish, how will tutoring help them, and if they are willing to put forth the effort. Even though my style is more traditional (lecture style) it is infused with personal experiences, history, little-known facts, cartoons, student drawings, and anything in my bag of goodies to make the subject more exciting and accessible. If I have a major shortfall, it is in the area of technology. I can use Zoom, can access the internet, but I forget how to use PowerPoint and use basic word processing. Also, at this time, I am not capable of putting on a technology show if that is more to your liking. I am a history buff, enjoy reading and needlepoint, and spoiling my two cats.
