I was a teaching assistant for college students for 3 years in cell biology and anatomy lab when I was a grad student. Recently, I have been tutoring at the high school level for both science and math for about 5 years. My lessons involve discussions about the subject matter and instruction about the material, giving examples when necessary. I ask questions to the student to make sure he/she understands the material and can relate it to other subjects. And of course answer any questions the student may have. I make sure the student understands a topic before we proceed with another topic.
