Having tutored before I found the best way to tutor is to adapt to the requirements on the individual.

I tend to prefer to work through exercises together to ensure full understanding of the subject matter and then allow them to demonstrate this independently with guidance from me if need be. I will consolidate the material by setting reading and weekly exercises to discuss in the next session. This keeps engagement with the subject at a high level.
